Light, simple and seaworthy

John Watkinson designed his boats to be light, simple and seaworthy. Everyone wants to improve their boat, and so do I, but always within those three principles. That is why we build the hull by vacuum infusion. It comes out lighter and stiffer than hand lay-up allows, and the process is kinder to the environment as well. The weight saved makes a real difference, because today's sailor brings an outboard, batteries and plenty of gear on board. With a lighter hull, the Coaster sails once more the way Watkinson intended.

We laminate buoyancy into the decks, which makes the boat stiffer, roomier and safer. The Coaster is CE certified for coastal waters, and her rig is so straightforward that she is easy to sail single-handed. On her trailer she can follow you to new cruising grounds, and she is just as happy in a marina or on a mooring.

From day sails to long passages

The Coaster is made for day sailing with four on board and for weekends for two. The cabin has two full-length berths, room to cook, a toilet and plenty of stowage. And if you want to go further than a weekend, the Coaster will take you there: some genuinely long voyages have been made in this boat.

The first series

We are building these Coasters in collaboration with the English yard Honnor Marine in Swanage, where the Coaster is built today as the Original Devon Coaster. The experience of Michel Maartens, who ran Drascombe Nederland for twenty-five years, has gone into them. The boats are built in Poland, in a series rather than one at a time. That lowers the cost, and I want to pass that saving on to the buyers.

Everyone who joins gets their own build number, with a name plate on board. There is also a copper plate with a code that links to the photo record of your own boat being built, from the first layer to the launch. You are of course welcome at that launch yourself. The earlier you join, the more choice you have of build number and the earlier your boat comes in the build order. Building starts as soon as there are enough buyers.

Finished the way you want

Hull and deck come in a colour of your choice; a steel-blue hull with a light grey deck is a fine example of what is possible. The sails are made by Aerosails in Huizen, the Netherlands. They are optimised specifically for the Coaster, in classic tan with UV protection, so they set better and last longer.

Beyond that, you put together your own package, for example a trailer, a petrol or electric outboard, Raymarine electronics, a spray hood with cockpit tent, and cushions. For this unique first series, all options come with a 20% discount.

Joining the series

The introductory price of €42,750 including VAT is a one-off offer for the boats of the first series. You can reserve a place in the series now for €1,000. That amount is deducted from the purchase price later, and you get it back if the series does not go ahead.

Would you like to trade in your current boat? I am happy to discuss it. Any Drascombe is welcome, from Dabber to Coaster and from Drifter to Peterboat.

Who builds your boat

My name is Erwin van Doeselaar. Earlier this year I took over Drascombe Nederland, and since then I have looked after maintenance, repairs and storage in Groningen, the Netherlands, as well as buying and selling used Drascombes. Drascombe Europe is the name under which I build and sell boats outside the Netherlands. Building new boats is the next step for the same hands. So with me you are not just buying a boat, but, if you wish, the care that goes with it. The demonstration boat stands rigged in my shed, and you are very welcome to come and see her by appointment.

Frequently asked questions

When will my boat be delivered?

We expect delivery in the summer or autumn of 2027. The earlier you join, the sooner your boat's turn comes.

What happens to my reservation if the series does not go ahead?

You get your €1,000 back in full.

When do I pay?

You reserve a place with €1,000, which is deducted from the purchase price. Once building of your boat begins, 65% of the purchase price is due. The remaining 35% is paid on delivery.

Can I tow the Coaster myself?

Yes. Which driving licence you need depends on the combined permitted weight of car and trailer, and the rules differ from country to country. Within the EU, a standard car licence (category B) is usually enough with an ordinary car. We are happy to check the details with you.

Can I trade in my current boat?

Yes, any Drascombe is welcome as a trade-in.

Can I also order a Longboat, Lugger or Gig?

Yes, you are very welcome. Alongside the Coaster I would like to build the Longboat, Lugger and Gig for customers too, and I would be glad to hear of any interest in a Scaffie or Dabber as well. You can mention the model you have in mind under Comments in the form.

Do you deliver outside the Netherlands?

Yes. All boats are handed over in Groningen, so for buyers anywhere in the EU the price includes 21% Dutch VAT. Outside the EU we deliver without VAT; the importing country then usually charges its own VAT or sales tax. If you live abroad, a tailored arrangement is possible and I am happy to think it through with you.

Interested in the first series?

I would be glad to hear from you. You can sign up to be kept informed, or ask straight away for a conversation about a place in the series. In that case I will ask you a few questions, so that I can prepare well for our conversation.
